Spring is on its way!

Hey, wait, we don't have palm trees in Carnegie! Oh, just indulge in a little California dreamin'--I don't know about you, but these murky spring days can be more tedious than any crisp winter day. And, see, Pasadena stole our idea for business banners.

As temperatures moderate and the days grow longer, events and activities are in the planning stages for businesses, residents and visitors throughout Carnegie's business district. Take a walk and plan lunch or an early dinner at one of Carnegie's restaurants!

In this update, you'll find information on our upcoming Gallery Walk, planting dates and information for Carnegie's planting sites and Adopt-a-Planter 2005, early ideas for the walking/biking trail that's been in the planning stages for Carnegie, our Sprout Fund Mural application, plans for our upcoming mixer and other items of interest in town.

Carnegie Renaissance's home page

It's been a while since I've completed an update--this site is huge and got pretty disorganized after the flood with all the information posted nearly daily sometimes. I did a little cleanup, and now it's easier to navigate in most current areas. In preparation for soliciting a fiscal sponsor and applying for Carnegie Renaissance's articles of incorporation and 501(c)3 status, I've been attending a series of seminars twice monthly since January, and have held off monthly meetings for this quarter. However, beginning in May, meetings will resume at a time and date to be named at our mixer in April. Consider joining with us to plan and sponsor events and advertising to help build our business community. Since the internet is such a quick and effective way to keep in touch with each other and the outside world, I'd like to enhance this page with Carnegie's business listings and links to your business websites as well as posting events and specials you may have, and I have added a links for feedback in nearly every article in this update. Please let me know this information is valuable to you! I'll see you around town. -- Bernadette Kazmarski, Director

SPECIFICALLY BUSINESS

Banners
Because of the popularity of the "Welcome to Carnegie" banners, Carnegie Renaissance is offering them once again for sale. Each banner is $100.00 and includes your business name across the bottom. Carnegie Renaissance will be accepting orders for banners until Friday, March 25, 2004. The new banners will be installed in April. For more information or to purchase a banner, call 412-429-9553, visit the Historical Society of Carnegie at 1 West Main Street, 412-276-7447, e-mail Carnegie Renaissance or click here for the online order form .

Business Mixer
It's time for another quarterly mixer. These are intended not only to get businesses together, but also to highlight the business that hosts the event. The date will be Thursday, April 21, and we're looking for a place to meet. Prior to Cefalo's we normally had about 35 attendees, but even if we don't meet there I hope we'll see increased attendance as we get to know each other better and exchange business interests. Please e-mail me if you would like to host the meeting or would like to suggest a venue.

List Your Business
I'd like to make Carnegie Renaissance's site a resource for businesses to contact each other, residents to find businesses in town, and those outside Carnegie to find out about our business district. Building off of "What Our Businesses Are Doing", which was a regular feature of the site during the flood recovery months, I will begin a categorized directory of businesses. If you would like to be listed, please e-mail me your business's full name and address, contact information, a link to your website if available, and a general category. To ensure I include only those who want to be included, and that I get your information correct, I will only list your business if you have contacted me and sent your information to me.

Flood-relief Assistance Information
Since much of the information is still pertinent, I've maintained most of the articles about flood relief assistance and clean-up that have been on this page. Information on flood-relief assistance for businesses

ABOUT TOWN

Sprout Fund Mural
Yes, we are applying for murals! The Sprout Public Art Fund helps to organize and underwrites the cost of murals in public places to enhance urban areas with art that is accessible to an entire town. I met with the director of the program and walked him and his assistant around Carnegie on a beautiful snowy day in February to assess possible mural sites, and they were very impressed with Carnegie in general and the mural possibilities our town presents. Click here to read about our application information, scheduling and a link to their site.

OUR ARTS COMMUNITY

Gallery Walk
Our four galleries are sponsoring a gallery walk on Friday, April 1, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Download an invitation, visit all four galleries and have your invitation entered into a drawing for a piece of artwork, pictured here. Click here to read the full details. We hope to see you Friday!

Arts Community Funding
I had the great pleasure of distributing the grant money from donations collected and directed to our arts community. Read more about it here.

URBAN PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENTAL

Great PA Clean-up Day
April 23, 2005 is the "Great PA Cleanup Day", and the DEP and PennDOT will provide materials for groups who will clean up in local neighborhoods and along roadways. We are organizing volunteers to help clean up in residential neighborhoods and areas in town which still need to be cleaned up after the flood. Read about it on the Pennsylvania Dep website. Please contact me to help organize or volunteer with this worthwhile effort!

Flower Power
Adopt-A-Planter 2005

This program was so fun and successful last year, Carnegie Renaissance is once again offering families, individuals, groups and organizations as well as businesses the opportunity to "Adopt A Planter" along Main Street in Carnegie. Each adoptee is given a watering can with the program logo, a plaque with the name of the adoptee to place on the planter and enough flowers to fill the planter. Let's choose our color scheme and get planning!

Western Pennsylvania Conservancy Planting Sites
We have three planting sites within Carnegie which are sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy--the Carnegie Interchange on the Parkway West, the intersection of Mansfield and Chartiers and the intersection of Lydia and Chestnut. The WPC also offers your name on the signs at the planting sites for a donation to their Community Garden Program. Click here to see the planting layouts, scheduled dates and other details.

Veteran's Memorial Planting Sites in Carnegie
We also have two municipal war memorials in Carnegie which can accommodate flowers, one at the bottom of Beechwood Avenue and one in Carnegie Park. Read about details of planting these sites.

Carnegie Park Memorial Fund
Established in 2004 by Dorothy Kelly, we are designing a garden for perennials and trees in Carnegie Park. Please e-mail for further details.

The Chartiers Trail
The draft Trail Feasibility Study was presented two years ago, and plans are in the works for beginning walking/biking loop trails through Carnegie's neighborhoods and connections to other trails in the area, along with greenspace development in Carnegie. Please let me know your interest in this subject. I will be providing regular updates on this, and public support from both residences and businesses will be critical as this progresses.

Creek Information
Stormwater management is the issue with the Lower Chartiers Watershed, encompassing Chartiers Creek and all its tributaries. Here is a briefing on some of what's happened in the past few months, with more to come in the future. In addition, I've maintained some of the environmental articles from the original flood information page.
